Laser Vision Correction
What is Laser Vision Correction?
Laser Eye Surgery refers to a group of laser vision correction procedures designed to offer you freedom from glasses or contact lenses. These aids are needed to improve vision in the following conditions:
Short-sightedness or myopia
Long-sightedness or hyperopia
Astigmatism where the front of the eye is shaped like a rugby ball instead of a football
These conditions prevent the light entering the eye from being properly focused on the retina, causing blurred vision. Laser eye surgery improves this focus by using a laser to change the shape of the cornea (the front of the eye). It is usually divided into LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) or PRK (photo-refractive keratectomy).
In LASIK, a protective flap in the cornea is made first using one type of laser. After this, a different laser reshapes the surface underneath the flap. The flap helps with faster healing and recovery of vision. PRK is reserved for cases where LASIK is unsuitable and only uses one laser to reshape the cornea and change the focus of the eye. Visual recovery takes longer as there is no flap. In the long term, both LASIK and PRK have the same success rates in terms of vision.
